Review for Unit Exam

School of Athens by Raphael (p.45 in your book & you can click on this picture to make it bigger)

*The question has to do with how is this painting reflective of the Renaissance Era. In the first two paragraphs you will give an overview as to what the Renaissance was and how life was changing for the better

*In paragraphs three and four you will discuss how this painting is reflective of the Renaissance art and era. Talk about the statues in the background (probably made with the help of patrons), the depth of the painting (perspective) and all the movements that are happening in the painting.

*Discuss how the people on the bottom left are studying mathematics (the book) and the people on the right side (holding the globe) are studying astronomy (SECULAR SOCIETY, WORRYING ABOUT THE HERE AND NOW!!!). Discuss the movements and how they are reflective of a 'thinking society' that is concerned about the here and now

*Summarize with a concluding paragraph

*Your assignment is a practice essay, with 5 paragraphs just like we talked about.

Chapter 4 Test Review

Here are some things to consider with material from the chapter.....

*The idea of mercantilism is that a country tries to become self-sufficient. The goal is to sell more (or trade more) than you buy. This way you don't have to rely on other countries

*The reason that Europeans saw Africans as a better source of labor than Natives is because the Africans were immune to the diseases. Too many Natives were dying from smallpox, malaria, etc.

*The spread of Islam into Africa helped to increase the slave trade in Africa during the 7th century; which was the time slavery first started in Africa

*The choices that you have for the first country to import Africans to the Americas are Spain, England, France, Germany

*New wealth from the Americas & the growth in overseas trade is what prompted a wave of new businesses and trade practices in Europe in the 16th & 17th centuries.

*Africa was affected by the Atlantic slave trade because cultures lost their best people and families were torn apart.

-Good luck tomorrow and study up!
